Lionism Is About Service
There are some things we all need to be aware of . . . there actually are some new clubs forming here in District 36. It has been a long time coming. Though I cannot say where they are right now (I hope to do that soon,) I am anxiously hopeful every Lions Club in Oregon will be having on their agendas how much they are willing to contribute to the charting night celebrations that we will be soon celebrating. For those of us who have not been a Lion when a new club launches their club with a “Chartering Night” celebration, it has been customary for not only a sponsoring club to make a contribution to get the new club up and running for their service portfolio but for all of the clubs in the Multiple District and beyond to give what they can to ensure the new club can fully embed into their community with service, service, service.
When this happens it is a statement from the entire Lion community as a whole to profess, in a way, that Lionism is about service which all of us are committed to no matter how large or small our clubs are. For some of our older clubs that have gone on for too long without adding new members yet are holding onto their Lion identity, it is a gentle reminder to ourselves it is worth it to believe that it is important each of us has a core disposition to be of service to our community and the communities throughout Oregon. We wear our Lions pins and tee shirts, our jackets and ball caps to not simply show to our neighbors a pride (pun intended) in belonging, but as an outward expression that we indeed do believe deep down, “I am a person who is willing to be a person of service.”
Our efforts to belong are not for a resume, a point of interest in a job application or a talking point in a party conversation, we tell the world we are a point person who will find other like-minded people to band together to support our communities. Whether a day care need to be renovated or built, a warming center for when the electricity is temporarily shut off, or a helping hand to bring food to those who cannot make it themselves to the store or making sure everyone can afford glasses or hearing aids, Lions throughout Oregon believe in themselves and believe in the entire community of service. Let’s keep it going. Exciting days are ahead of us.
