Lions Clubs of Multiple District 36, Oregon and Northern California

We Serve

Lions of Oregon & Northern California are a part of an international network of 1.4 million men and women in 200 countries and geographic areas who work together to answer the needs that challenge communities around the world. Lions are best known for working to end preventable blindness, the giving of eyeglasses and hearing aids for the needy and local service projects.

Mission Statement of Lions Clubs International:

"To create and foster a spirit of understanding among all people for humanitarian needs by providing voluntary services through community involvement and international cooperation."

Expanding Volunteering

So, oh my, the year is half over. Where does all this time slip by. It seems that every Friday I say “Oh my stars and garters. It is the weekend already! How did that happen?” As “retired from the paying job” folks know, it seem you are busier than ever, doing work you choose to fill your life with. For the “un-retired”, it is even more so.

So now I have yet another challenge for you. Look for even more areas where volunteer service is needed.  But now, coordinate that with your local Oregon (or California) Employment Department. Why? Because many Food Stamp / SNAP recipients have work requirements, 80 hours a month minimum. At the same time, many companies are down-sizing or closing completely, so those work-for-pay opportunities are shrinking. But qualified volunteer work can satisfy that requirement, but it must be properly documented. Those volunteers may not be able to pay membership fees, but they can be “Friends of Lions”.  They might also gain work skills and communication skills to enhance employment possibilities. And they won’t go hungry because of lost benefits.

For those with a true desire to serve and capability to increase Lions’ community service, the club can establish a “Heart of a Lion” administrative fund, like a “membership scholarship”.  Ashland Lions Club have un-housed members that have incredible ideas and skillsets, but have an economic barrier, so their membership fees were gifted. Their contributions and new perspectives can be an incredible source of inspiration.

These Friends of Lions volunteers not only retain nutrition benefits but also gain the awareness of Who Lions are, What Lions do, Where the serve, and Why it is so rewarding. Future Lions at least.

In parallel, Lions can partner with other community groups and shelters to coordinate services, with emphasis on the Lions International Global Causes. Synergy!!

So this is an idea. You can call me crazy, or go “Hmm, maybe”

Kindness begins with You!

Will you not help me hasten the day when there shall be no preventable blindness; no little deaf, blind child untaught; no blind man or woman unaided? I appeal to you Lions, you who have your sight, your hearing, you who are strong and brave and kind. Will you not constitute yourselves Knights of the Blind in this crusade against darkness?
