We Serve

Lions of Oregon & Northern California are a part of an international network of 1.4 million men and women in 200 countries and geographic areas who work together to answer the needs that challenge communities around the world. The Dalles, Is Celebrating Their 100th Anniversary

As I write this column, I am looking forward to participating in this evening’s Lion’s event. My wife, myself, and one of the Hermiston Club members and District Leadership Team Coordinator, Bev Bridgewater, will be attending from Hermiston. One of the oldest and most active Lions Club in our District, The Dalles, is celebrating their 100th Anniversary. Imagine that many successful years of serving their community. The Gala is designed to be a fun event with participants being dressed from their favorite era (spanning 100 years, maybe) and located at the Granada Theater, built just 3 years after The Dalles Lions Club was chartered. I think fun is part of the success story for any Lions Club. And to think of the many service activities this Club has done over those 100 years. Congratulations to The Dalles Lions Club!

This coming week, my wife and I are also looking forward to attending another milestone event. The Jordan Valley Lions Club is celebrating their 56th anniversary year on the actual day, October 13th. We have passed through Jordan Valley on past trips to California, but have not stopped, nor been to the Lions Clubhouse. I have heard many positive comments about the Club from Past District Governors. Again, think of how this Club has supported their community through the many service projects over the past 50 plus years. Congratulations to the Jordan Valley Lions Club!

One of the things that I am seeing is that many of our Clubs are not getting the credit they deserve for their service activities (including my own Club). At the recent Memphis Leadership Forum, I learned that only 61% of Clubs are reporting service activities. Lions International has changed the Portal allowing reporting service to be simpler. Any Lion can report service activities in the Portal, with the Club Secretary or President approving the submittal to Lions Club International. Let’s take credit for the many ways WE SERVE. After all, Lions are truly Rooted in Service (and fun!).

“Will you not help me hasten the day when there shall be no preventable blindness; no little deaf, blind child untaught; no blind man or woman unaided? I appeal to you Lions, you who have your sight, your hearing, you who are strong and brave and kind. Will you not constitute yourselves Knights of the Blind in this crusade against darkness?”
