We Serve

Lions of Oregon & Northern California are a part of an international network of 1.4 million men and women in 200 countries and geographic areas who work together to answer the needs that challenge communities around the world. Lions are best known for working to end preventable blindness, the giving of eyeglasses and hearing aids for the needy and local service projects.

Mission Statement of Lions Clubs International:

"To create and foster a spirit of understanding among all people for humanitarian needs by providing voluntary services through community involvement and international cooperation."

One conversation. One invitation. One new Lion. One more opportunity to serve.

Greetings Lions,

As the colors of autumn begin to brighten our communities, October gives us a wonderful opportunity to reflect on something that makes Lions special: we are people who care—and we turn that caring into action. We are Rooted in Service!

Every time we serve a meal, support a family, help a child, protect our environment, improve someone's vision, or simply show up when our community needs us, we demonstrate what it means to be a Lion. And when we grow our membership, we create even more opportunities to make a difference.

This month is a good opportunity to celebrate White Cane Day on October 15th by helping our blind community.

October 8th to the 18th is our Global Vision Week of Service. Be visible in these activities and report on the Lions Portal and of course, post on social media. Wear a Lions hat or pin or vest when serving or have a magnet on your car. Get creative in letting potential Lions know who you are and tell them why you serve. What’s your story?

Think about the people already around you—your friends, neighbors, coworkers, family members, community volunteers, business leaders and others who have a heart for service. Don't worry about having the perfect words. Start with a smile and a conversation. Ask them what they are passionate about. Ask what they love about their community. And ask them to come serve with you and your club and really find out what Lions are all about.

Let them experience the fellowship, friendship and fulfillment that come from serving alongside others. Let them see the difference Lions make—not just through what we accomplish, but through the people we become when we serve together.

Our communities are filled with incredible assets: talented people, caring organizations, local knowledge, relationships and a tremendous capacity to make a difference. Our role is to connect those strengths and help turn passion into action.

So, Lions, let's make October a month of invitations.

One conversation. One invitation. One new Lion. One more opportunity to serve.

Thank you for everything you do, every day, to make a difference.

Let's grow together. Let's serve together. And let's Just Ask.

Yours in Lionism and Service,

District 36R Governor Lion Karen Norton

“Will you not help me hasten the day when there shall be no preventable blindness; no little deaf, blind child untaught; no blind man or woman unaided? I appeal to you Lions, you who have your sight, your hearing, you who are strong and brave and kind. Will you not constitute yourselves Knights of the Blind in this crusade against darkness?”
